Built in 2024, the “Openly” multifamily residence in Widnau, Canton of St. Gallen, is Europe’s largest hemp-constructed building and sets groundbreaking standards in sustainable construction. With 19 apartments (8 rental units and 11 owner-occupied units), the building saves approximately 900 metric tons of CO₂ compared to conventional construction methods through the consistent use of renewable and circular building materials such as hemp, clay, biochar, wood, and reused structural steel, the building saves approximately 900 metric tons of CO₂ compared to conventional construction methods. The project also takes an innovative approach to building services: In the prefabricated concrete wet rooms, integrated Jouliashower channels with heat recovery ensure that the energy contained in the shower water is efficiently recovered and that hot water consumption is significantly reduced.The project is based on the concept of a small residential community that is open to young and old alike and every stage of life in between. Self-determination in every life situation is just as much a part of this as ecology and sustainability. Time-honored traditions have their place, as does room for innovation—in an environment that creates incentives, offers opportunities, and yet allows everyone their freedom of choice.
